MAHOLI Mosebetsi was working at a farm in the Eastern Cape when he was plagued by episodes of severe depression. He was referred to Tiisetso Mateisi, a 28-year-old self-proclaimed traditional healer in Mohale’s Hoek’s Ketane area. Mosebetsi promptly returned from the Eastern Cape and moved in with Mateisi who assured him that his suffering had nothing to do with his work, family or stress. The ‘healer’ told Mosebetsi that his depression was caused by a special spirit “calling him” to be a traditional healer.
