Fifth title in a row for LDF Ladies

The Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Ladies have won the Women Super League (WSL) for the fifth consecutive time. The juggernaut side wrapped up another dominant campaign last weekend, and just as they did last year, LDF finished the season undefeated.

However, despite the fact that LDF Ladies were confirmed champions several weeks ago, surprisingly arrangements to crown them were not made by the WSL or Lesotho Football Association (LEFA).

After their final game of the season last weekend, LDF players had no medals, not even a trophy to celebrate with as is the norm, and LDF head coach Lengana Nkhethoa admitted they were not happy.

At the time of writing, there was still no official statement from WSL to explain what happened. When contacted, WSL spokesperson Mohale Bolokoe said he would find out why LDF Ladies were not given their crowning, but was not found again on his phone and no one has been able to say if LDF will still get what is due to them.

A disappointed Nkhethoa said it was clear they were champions when they played Kick4Life last month and they could have been awarded their medals then. What irked Nkhethoa even more is that there was no communication whatsoever from the league. He said it would have been better if they had been told to expect the situation.

Despite the drama, Nkhethoa chose to focus on his players and said going unbeaten two seasons in a row is not easy.

He admitted LDF play their WSL games without any motivation because there is really no team that can challenge them and they are at risk of dropping off in terms of performances. The club hopes to play more international friendlies to keep their level high, he said.

“We will determine how many friendly games we get from outside so that we can find ourselves competitive,” he said.

With the season ending, the decision has not been made yet as to whether the champions will be enrolled in the COSAFA Women’s Champions League later in the year, which will serve as the qualifier for the CAF Women’s Champions League. That decision will be made by LEFA who will shoulder the expenses should they decide to enroll the team.
