LETŠENG Diamond Mine has made significant skills transfer in its operations that has resulted in the company reducing the number of expatriate staff in key positions. That is according to Letšeng Diamond Mine Chief Executive Officer, Matooane Thinyane. Thinyane was speaking at a media engagement session in Maseru last Friday.

The purpose of the session was to create a formal platform over which the mine could engage with the media, and by extension, the general public.
Thinyane said the locals are taking over key positions at the mine through skills transfer from the expatriates.
“Some skills are rare,” he said, adding that in such scenarios they have to source out the skills.
At the moment, the expatriates are holding positions in senior management, geotechnical section – rope access, yellow fleet management and contractors (CMS and ER24).
Thinyane said where there are no locals who have knowledge for some positions, they have to source out expatriates to fill up those positions.
To date, the mine has sponsored students in the fields of Mining Engineering, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechatronics, Metallurgy, Mineral Survey, Environmental Health, Electrical Engineering, Accounting, Internal Auditing, Chemical Engineering, Emergency Medical Care, Mineral Processing and Millwright.
Since 2006, Letšeng has awarded 55 scholarships to local students to study these courses.
Out of this number, 47 have graduated.
Thinyane said Letšeng has so far employed 18 students it has sponsored while 22 have been employed by other companies.
