The incident happened at around 4.50am.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Montantši Makhele told thepost that the police were summoned to the long-distance drop-off point near the border.

And when they arrived they saw two men lying in a pool of blood next to the taxi they had just disembarked from.

Brig Makhele said it is alleged that an unknown number of males got off from a white Isuzu bakkie and started shooting at passengers who were being dropped off from the taxi.

The taxi was coming from Johannesburg.

Two men, aged 31 and 40, were fatally shot, he said.

Brig Makhele said the suspects then jumped into a bakkie and sped off from the scene.

He said an urgent call was sent out to nearby police stations and the bakkie was stopped on the R26 near Manyatseng Township by the Ladybrand police.

“Two suspects fled and disappeared into the darkness leaving the 29-year-old driver behind,” Brig Makhele said.

He said after searching the vehicle, a 9mm firearm was found and confiscated.

“Ladybrand police have opened two cases of murder,” he said.

When thepost’s crew arrived at the border, the police and pathologists were busy loading the bodies into a van.

Movement across the border was temporarily suspended to allow a team of police and pathologists to work on the crime scene.

Police are pleading with anyone who might have information on the suspects to contact Detective Colonel Bolsiek at 082 466 8530, or call police crimeline 08600 10111 or drop an anonymous tip-off on MySapsApp.
