Diplomat fights recall

Sources said Seliane has never been given diplomatic consideration since he was posted to Pretoria before the 2022 general elections.

They said before any diplomat is deployed, a country to which he is supposed to be posted to, has to confirm that he or she is given diplomatic consideration.

But this has never happened with Seliane.

Seliane reportedly has dual citizenship for Lesotho and South Africa.

Contacted for comment on Tuesday, Seliane declined to comment on the matter as it is still under discussions.

“This issue is being discussed internally. I do not want to delve into it now,” Seliane said.

He said the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant stakeholders are still working on the issue.

“I am afraid to take it to the media now,” he said, adding that he is still in talks with his lawyer to see if they could find a common ground.

Seliane said as soon as a decision has been reached, he will then be in a position to talk about the matter openly.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kutloano Pheko, said these are just allegations levelled against Selikane.

“I don’t have such information and even if I did, certain information is personal,” Pheko said.

He said even the human resources department could not give out such information because it is personal.

He said diplomats are given a 36-month contract in foreign missions that is renewable if the employer decides to do so.

Pheko said the case of Selikane is an internal issue.
