THE head of intelligence at the Maseru Correctional Facility says they recently tightened security at the prison after the mastermind of last December’s prison escape, Tumelo Mpopo, tried to escape again. Chief Officer Tsietsi told the commission investigating the prison escape that Mpopo’s second attempt to flee was foiled.

Chief Officer Tsietsi told the commission’s chairman, Justice Realeboha Mathaba, that Mpopo “was caught trying to climb a wall”.
“There is a toilet in that cell. It does not have a door, but has a wall. He was caught climbing that wall,” Chief Officer Tsietsi said.
“We found out that Mpopo was trying to escape, but fortunately enough he was caught,” he said.
He said he also recently told his colleagues to remove the buckets in the isolation cells where Mpopo is now housed.
“In my view Tumelo (Mpopo) is a springbok.”
He disclosed that he already had intelligence after Mpopo’s recapture in Qacha’s Nek that he told his cell mates that Maseru Central Prison security features were weak and that he was going to escape again.
Justice Mathaba asked him to name the officer in Qacha’s Nek who told him that Mpopo vowed to escape again.
“On what day did you receive that information?” Justice Mathaba asked.
Chief Officer Tsietsi told the commission that he could not remember the dates, “but it was on the same day Tumelo (Mpopo) was transferred from Qacha’s Nek prison to Maseru Central Prison earlier this year”.
Justice Mathaba asked him if he reported the intelligence to his managers.
“Superintendent Ramangoana was in the office the day I reported, and I also recall Chief Officer Khabane, I told them that Mpopo might escape again.”
Asked if his managers acted on the information, Chief Officer Tsietsi said they only took measures recently which saw them tighten the security systems so that Mpopo does not escape again.
