Standard Lesotho Bank (SLB) has awarded cash prizes to two farms that have shown commitment in their mentorship programme. Riverside Fresh Produce was awarded M39 780 while Litsoa-mobung Fresh Farm bagged M161 000.

This happened on Monday in Maseru at an event held by the Green Value Supply Chains Project and the Local Supply Development Program (GVC-LSDP) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) and Finmak were part of the event.
The aim of the project is to innovate and pave way for a more efficient and sustainable future in farming.
There were 120 farms that signed up for the project and a total of 27 farmers were identified to participate in the mentorship programme.
Only two farms were chosen as the best to win in the programme.
’Makananelo Chefa, Trade Promotion Officer at the LNDC, said the money that the two farms got will meet their unmet initiatives in farming.
“These cheques will support and assist implementation of good agricultural practices and infrastructure,” she said.
Chefa also said the farmers should enter and register for the initiative as their goal is to enhance productivity, sustainability and overall farm management so that Basotho produce for themselves.
“Production infrastructure should be enhanced in Lesotho so that Basotho produce locally and internationally” she said.
For her part, ’Malerato Khoeli, the Managing Director at Riverside Fresh Produce, said the money will help them pave their way and motivate them to produce more.
“I am pleased to see that Basotho support local produce made in Lesotho,” Khoeli said.
“We are going to increase our local produce as we now supply meat to Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) locally and we also supply vegetables to Pick n’ Pay,” she added.
Hoaba Nkunyane, the manager at Litsoa-Mobung, said this has given them more motivation to produce.
Through this initiative, they have gained a market and now supply meat and vegetables to the South African market.
Standard Lesotho Bank Head of Business and Commercial Banking, Keketso Makara, said they offered this money to the best performing farmers to make Basotho aware that more farmers are needed in the country.
Makara said there is more money in agriculture and Basotho should be committed to produce food.
“Basotho should engage with the LNDC for registration and improve their farming management,” he said.
