Madidilane plots Bantu revival

Bantu head coach James Madidilane is plotting ‘A Matšo Matebele’s comeback next season and has set his sights on Lioli’s title. Madidilane signed a new contract to remain in Mafeteng three weeks ago, ending speculation over the future of the popular coach. Bantu finished third in the Premier League last season, 11 points behind champions Lioli, and Madidilane is aware they have a huge gap to close.

Bantu have already started their pre-season preparations, and Madidilane is assessing new players and he said ‘A Matšo Matebele’ are looking to bring in new faces while the transfer window is open.

Madidilane made a dramatic return to Bantu in January, taking over when Bob Mafoso left the Mafeteng based side. He initially joined on a six-month deal that would be reviewed at the end of the season and, a few weeks ago, Bantu president John Leuta announced Madidilane would be staying on to have a full season with the team.

Madidilane’s contract is a one-year deal with an option to extend for a further year, thepost has learnt.

When the South African tactician joined Bantu, they were in third place, five points behind leaders Matlama with 14 games still to go in the season. His first game was a 1-0 win over Limkokwing University, but inconsistency saw them drop points against the likes of Lifofane and Liphakoe.

Ultimately, Bantu failed to defend their league crown.

Speaking to thepost on Tuesday, Madidilane said they are working to turn things around and bring pride back to Mafeteng. He admitted things have changed since he left five years ago but said he expected it and has had to adjust to the new environment in local football.

“We had so many challenges that contributed to our failure to defend our title, we are working hard to change and prepare,” he said.

“We want to win the title, I think that’s what everyone wants to do but we know it is not going to be easy because Lioli will want to defend their trophy, and then you have Matlama there as well. We are assembling a team that can bring back the pride of Bantu in Mafeteng,” he said.

The South African coach is much loved in Mafeteng after leading ‘A Matšo Matebele’ to back-to-back league titles in 2017 and 2018 and news of his appointment will surely delight the district.

Madidilane said they are trying to find the “right balance” in the squad. Bantu have welcomed back players coming from loan deals elsewhere and the coach will be making a decision on them.

Madidilane also confirmed influential midfielder Lindokuhle Phungulwa will stay on as club captain unless there is a change in personnel. He insisted a captain is not something one can change whenever they want.
