Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) have bid farewell to Likuena international Thabang Malane who has agreed to join Namibian outfit African Stars. Malane will join his new club next Thursday on a two-year deal and the move is a big step in his career. Based in Windhoek, African Stars are champions of the country’s highest division, the Namibia Premier Football League, and they are preparing to face Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF Champions League next month.

LCS held a farewell ceremony on Monday for Malane, who bid farewell to his teammates and received their best wishes.
Malane joined LCS, known affectionately as ‘Masheshena’, in 2017 and has since become one of the most highly rated defenders in the country, as evidenced by the 30 caps he has earned for Lesotho.
Speaking to thepost yesterday, Malane expressed his gratitude to his teammates for pushing him to work hard, a team effort that has now presented him with the opportunity to play abroad.
Malane encouraged his former teammates to continue working hard because opportunities can arise unexpectedly.
“Since I joined the team in 2017, it felt like home because their approach towards each other was very comforting,” Malane told thepost.
“To the (LCS) players, they should work very hard because they don’t know who is watching them and what their plans are for them. Luck can come again in the team and (a foreign team can) pick one of them with an offer like this or better,” he said.
Malane said he hopes eye-catching performances in Namibia will open even more doors for him.
“We know that African Stars is a big team, but there are still other big teams in Africa, so I am going to work very hard to put my name on the radar of bigger teams. Namibia is the bridge for me, so I will have to work hard,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of LCS, the club’s spokesperson, Kofa Rantai, revealed that the initial interest in Malane surfaced after the COSAFA Cup held in Gqeberha, South Africa, three weeks ago.
African Stars were the most serious suitor and they followed up their original interest with an official offer, although Rantai declined to disclose how much the Namibian champions paid to secure Malane’s services.
With a transfer agreement in place with African Stars, Malane will no longer train with LCS to avoid potential injuries that could jeopardise the move.
“At LCS, we want to see Basotho in the football fraternity succeeding,” Rantai said. We will not stop a player from going to greener pastures, especially if such a player will be trained by other countries for the benefit of our national team, Likuena. We had to make sure that we do everything on time,” he added.
Rantai praised and thanked Malane for his service at ‘Masheshena’.
“He is a very good rightback and (he) played very well. We will always appreciate him, but in the team, there was always competition. We still have quality players who can play in his position,” he said.
Rantai advised Malane to remain humble and remember he is representing the nation in the Namibian premiership.
Rantai also noted that, “it has been a long time since LCS had many players in the national team”. This year LCS had two players in the Likuena squad at the COSAFA Cup and Rantai said the club is honoured that one has been recognised with a move abroad.
