The juggernauts will collide at Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena on August 11 and inaugurate the Maseru Community Cup that is sponsored by Deputy Prime Minister Nthomeng Majara through her foundation.
Global Cure, Econet Telecom Lesotho, Vodacom Lesotho, Sakisi Hotpot and Molefi Global Agencies (MGA) have also come on board to help the Nthomeng Majara Foundation.
In total, the sponsorship money is a whopping M200 000 with the champions set to go home with M100 000, making the Maseru Community Cup the richest ever pre-season in Lesotho football.
Speaking to thepost on Tuesday, MGA managing director Molefi Lengosane said organisers are expecting a high level of competition in the tournament with supporters enthusiastically cheering for their teams.
“We are expecting about 8 000 tickets to be available for sale, and the team whose supporters purchase the most tickets will be rewarded M5 000,” he said.
The runners-up of the tournament will receive M50 000 with the third and fourth placed each earning M25 000.
In addition to team prizes, individual awards such as the man of the match will be handed out though figures and details are yet to be finalised by the competition’s organisers.
The draw for the Maseru Community Cup tournament will use a folding method based on the number of tickets each team sells.
The team with the most tickets will play against the one with the least amount sold and the draw will be held on August 8, a day after the ticket sales deadline.
All tickets will be sold via Mpesa and Ecocash, with each team assigned its own merchant code for fans to use when purchasing tickets.
“The team with the most supporters will receive more money than the other teams. Each team will receive 70 percent of the money their supporters used to buy tickets,” Lengosane explained.
“This means if the team wins M100 000, they will also be given their 70 percent, and the foundation will only receive 30 percent. The money will be used to help orphanages or anywhere they need to lend a helping hand in society.”
The 70 percent share of ticket sales means that if Matlama supporters buy tickets worth M50 000, the club will get 70 percent of that M50 000, even if they are crowned champions.
Lengosane said organisers expect great things from the new blockbuster tournament.
“It is an opportunity for teams to gauge how far they are in terms of preparations for the new season and unveil their new signings to the fans. The tournament also aims to influence the spirit of supporters ahead of the new season,” he said.
The Maseru Community Cup promises to be an exciting off-season showpiece, bringing together fans and players in a celebration of football and community spirit.
