Lt Gen Letsoela said the soldiers, whose number he did not reveal, were arrested and detained for indiscipline.

The army boss did not reveal what acts of indiscipline the soldiers committed.

He however hinted that they could have said things that offended him on social media.

“A soldier must be well trained. They must leave the social media,” Lt Gen Letsoela said.

“You should push them and remind them that this is not Cabo Delgado,” he said.

“They think they are enjoying freedom.”

The army’s spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sakeng Lekola, declined to comment on the arrest of the soldiers.

He also said he would not say a thing about what offence they committed.

“No sir, we will not comment on that,” Lt Col Lekola said.

The army commander reminded the soldiers at a parade at Ratjomose Barracks that there are stipulated rules and regulations that guide the life of a soldier.

“If you do not behave well, the military police will handle you,” he said, referring to the soldiers who had just arrived from Cabo Delgado in Mozambique.

He also urged the soldiers at the parade to deal with people who threaten children and the elderly with guns.

“It is only you, the soldiers, who should be allowed to hold guns in the understanding that you are fighting,” he said.

He said they should all deal with “the gun madness until someone commits suicide”.

“We cannot just condemn it, we must deal with it.”

He said giving an ill-disciplined person a gun is a recipe for disaster.

He commended the soldiers who came back from the 48th Annual Shooting Championship with medals, saying “a soldier should know how to shoot and thoroughly know the weapon they are using”.
