Several Premier League clubs are scrambling to renovate their home grounds ahead of the 2024/25 season to meet the requirements set by the Premier League Management Committee (PLMC).

On August 5, the PLMC issued a memorandum identifying four grounds accredited to host league games next season.
The grounds are the District Football Association (DIFA) grounds in Leribe (Maputsoe) and Mohale’s Hoek, Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena and the Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) Ground, which is only partially approved.
The Leshoboro Stadium in Mafeteng, Pitso Ground in Butha-Buthe and Lesotho Agriculture College (LAC) Ground in Leribe have been completely banned from hosting matches.
Meanwhile, the Lioli Ground in Teyateyaneng, Ratjomose Ground, Police Training College (PTC) Ground and the league grounds in Morija and Nyakosoba have been warned to make necessary improvements or face suspension from hosting games in the upcoming season.
The LCS Ground, home to LCS Football Club, has been granted permission to host games for the first round of the season.
However, if it remains in its current state by January, it risks suspension. The Premier League has specified that the LCS Ground requires proper dressing rooms for both teams and match officials as chief among other improvements deemed necessary by the league for the ground to be up to its standard.
Although the ground is already fenced and the technical benches are separate from the crowd, security remains a significant concern.
In the past, Bantu supporters attacked officials at the ground, highlighting the need for enhanced security to ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators alike.
While the LCS Ground has some basic amenities such as toilets (albeit only two) and running tap water, these facilities are insufficient for a fully packed stadium.
Compared to other grounds like Morija, Nyakosoba, and Ratjomose, the LCS Ground is considered a better alternative.
Speaking to thepost on Monday, LCS FC spokesperson Kofa Rantai expressed confidence the club would meet the Premier League’s requirements in time. He acknowledged the lack of dressing rooms but emphasised the club’s commitment to addressing this issue.
“We already have toilets on our ground; the only thing we lack are dressing rooms. We have been given a second chance to fix this and we believe it has to happen now that we have been instructed to do so,” he said.
“We can build dressing rooms on the middle portion of the ground the they were already using.”
Rantai warned that losing the LCS Ground would be devastating, not just for LCS FC but also for other clubs that rely on it for hosting their home games. The financial implications would be severe for the club as well, as the revenue from renting out the ground helps LCS cover daily expenses.
One club particularly dreading the new season is Butha-Buthe’s Lifofane. With Pitso Ground in Butha-Buthe banned, the club faces the daunting challenge of funding travels to Maputsoe and hiring a ground, as it is their closest alternative.
Playing in Butha-Buthe previously saved the upstart club from hiring grounds and travel costs, but now all their league games will effectively be away fixtures.
Lifofane club president Letšolo Maliehe expressed deep concern over the impact this would have on the club, which is already struggling financially. Lifofane have no sponsor and Maliehe bemoaned that their home advantage had been taken away, which will force them to incur significant additional costs.
“Every team has its own home, and this is taking away the rights of the Butha-Buthe community to watch their team and see other teams come to Butha-Buthe,” Maliehe lamented.
“Our home advantage is gone because now every game will practically be an away game,” he added.
“We are going to struggle because we now have to hire a ground, and not just us — imagine transport costs of about M7 000 to go to (another district), sometimes twice in a row.”
Pitso Ground needs updated toilets, fencing to separate supporters from players and improvements to the pitch which gets waterlogged during the rainy season.
As a government property, the club has no control over the ground’s maintenance and is reliant on local government to make the necessary repairs — a situation that is unlikely to change anytime soon.
This problem is less common at grounds such Bambatha, which is the Lesotho Football Association’s (LEFA) headquarters, and the DIFA grounds in Maputsoe and Mohale’s Hoek, which are equipped with artificial turf and are properly maintained by LEFA.
The home of Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) in Ratjomose has also been flagged by the PLMC. The ground lacks toilets, water, and dressing rooms, forcing players to change in their buses or in full view of supporters.
However, it is considered one of the safest grounds due to the visibility of LDF members during games, with incidents of violence rarely occurring. The club plans to fence the ground and build change rooms though it remains uncertain if these improvements will be completed before the season starts.
The league season is due to begin next month.
The LCS Ground has been lined up as an alternative venue by LDF to host their home matches.
